Meeuwsen and Browner on Jim Thorpe Watch List

Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State University senior safety Mitch Meeuwsen and sophomore cornerback Brandon Browner have been named to the 2004 Jim Thorpe Award preseason 'watch list' by the Jim Thorpe Association of Oklahoma City. The award recognizes the top defensive back in the nation.Meeuwsen enters the season with 14 career interceptions, one shy of the school record. The 6-3 Forest Grove High School graduate has started 28 career games and was an honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference selection last season. He shared the team-high for interceptions in 2003 with six.Browner was the Pac-10's Freshman of the Year last season and earned mention on several freshman All-America teams. He joined Meeuwsen with six interceptions last season. The 6-4 Sylmar, Cal., native started all 13 games in 2003 and has been selected to several preseason All-America squads.The 29-member preseason list will be narrowed to 10 Nov. 1 and then to three finalists Nov. 22. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show Dec. 9.Joining Meeuwsen and Browner on the list from the Pac-10 are Oshiomoghe Atogwe of Stanford, Darnell Bing of USC and Donnie McCleskey of California.
