Former Stanford Swimmers Hyman And Ripple Johnston Finish In Top Five At U.S. Nationals

Stanford, Calif. - Former Stanford swimmers Misty Hyman (Arizona Desert Fox) and Shelly Ripple Johnston (Elmwood Sharks) finished fourth and fifth in the 100 fly, respectively, to highlight action for Stanford associates on the fourth day of the 2004 ConocoPhillips Summer National Swimming Championships being held in long-course meters at the Avery Aquatics Center on the campus of Stanford University. The event concludes on Saturday.Hyman had won the prelims earlier in the day to take the top seed into the finals but fell to fourth with a time of 1:00.35 that was one-tenth of a second slower than her prelim mark. Ripple`s time of 1:01.16 earned her the fifth slot.Incoming Stanford swimmer Brooke Bishop (Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics) also reached the championship finals of the 100 back, finishing sixth with a time of 1:04.25.Current Stanford junior Laura Davis (Terrapins Swim Club) had a 13th-place showing in the consolation finals of the 100 fly, clocking in with a time of 1:01.97.Incoming Stanford swimmer Katherine Bell and current Stanford senior Kirsten Gilbert finished 17th and 21st in the 'C' finals of the 100 breast, both swimming for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics. Bell clocked in with a time of 1:12.27, while Gilbert finished in 1:13.77. Current Stanford senior Lacey Boutwell (Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics) tied for 20th in the 'C' final of the 100 fly with a mark of 1:03.19.Bishop (100 fly, 26th, 1:03.00) and Boutwell (100 back, 39th, 1:07.78) also competed in other events on Friday.Other individual competitors associated with Stanford included incoming freshman Elizabeth Durot (400 free, 29th, 4:25.57; 100 fly, 50th, 1:04.42) and current sophomore Lauren Costella (400 free, 35th, 4:27.07). Durot competed for the Dynamo Swim Club, while Costella suited up for the Carson Tigersharks.Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics also had a sixth-place finish in the 800 free relay (8:23.67) with a team that featured Boutwell swimming the leadoff leg (2:05.61) and Bishop bringing the relay home (2:06.76).Individual event winners on Friday included Hayley McGregory (100 back, 1:02.55, Longhorn Aquatics), Kate Ziegler (400 free, 4:12.06, The Fish), Jessica Hardy (100 breast, 1:08.33, Irvine Novaquatics) and Tanica Jamison (100 fly, 59.23, Longhorn Aquatics (100 fly, 59.23, Longhorn Aquatics).An 800 relay team from Longhorn Aquatics of Elizabeth Hoffman (2:05.04), Kelsey Ditto (2:04.49), Tanica Jamison (2:03.28) and Andrea Axtell (2:05.24) was also a winner.Complete coverage of the 2004 ConocoPhillips Summer National Swimming Championships is provided on the USA Swimming website.Stanford women's swimming associates that have competed or are scheduled to compete in the event include current Stanford swimmers Boutwell, Costella, Davis, Lisa Falzone, Gilbert and Sarah Jones; former Stanford swimmers Megan Baumgartner, Hyman and Ripple Johnston; and 2004-05 incoming Stanford swimmers Bell, Bishop, Durot and Erica Liu.
