Coaches Pick USC In Pac-10 Preseason Poll

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The USC women's volleyball team, coming off its second consecutive NCAA Volleyball championship in 2003, was picked to win a third straight Pac-10 Conference title by a vote of the league's coaches. The Women of Troy, who have won 47 consecutive matches dating back to the 2002 season, received 89 points, 11 more than second-place UCLA. USC also claimed eight of the ten first-place votes, with the Bruins receiving the other two.UCLA's 78 points were trailed by WASHINGTON, picked third with 71 points. STANFORD, the Pac-10 and NCAA champions in 2001, held fourth position with 69 points. CALIFORNIA was selected in the fifth slot after receiving 58 points, followed by ARIZONA with 55 points.Rounding out the poll were ARIZONA STATE, OREGON STATE, OREGON and WASHINGTON STATE (tie), respectively.USC was also picked as the top team nationally by the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll, receiving 56 out of a possible 65 first place votes. No. 3 UCLA, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Washington, No. 10 California and No. 17 Arizona were also named to the Top 25. In addition, two Pac-10 teams other than USC received first place mention, as Stanford was awarded two nominations as the nation's best squad and California received one first-place vote. The Pac-10's six teams among the Top 25 was the most for any conference, followed by the Big Ten with four teams.The 2004 season begins Friday, Aug. 27 with USC opening defense of its titles against Georgia Tech in the NACWAA State Farm Volleyball Classic.The coaches have correctly picked the Pac-10 champion in nine of the previous 15 polls.
