Aug. 14, 2004
SEATTLE - The Washington football team took part in its third full-squad practice of the fall Saturdaymorning at Husky Stadium before re-emerging for the annual Picture Day, which began inthe afternoon. The somewhat lengthy practice covered all areas of the game. Special teams practice washighlighted by consistent long punts from sophomore Sean Douglas.Head coach Keith Gilbertson noted that it was good to see the players making more contactas the squad wore shoulder pads for the first time.'No one seems to by shy about hitting,' Gilbertson said, 'so I'm happy about that.'Gilbertson especially commended his defense. 'The defense looks like it's bigger, fasterand stronger than it's been,' he said. Gilbertson pointed out that the defensive side oftenhas the advantage in the early days of the fall practice season as the offense shakes off therust and tries to get its timing down. After the practice ended around 12:30, the players rushed off to lunch before their afternoonduties began. Those duties entailed having video head shots taken in the visitors' lockerroom -- for use on television broadcasts -- before heading out to the field for Picture Day,where thousands of Husky fans awaited, enjoying the free hot dogs and soda as well as thenice weather.Fans in attendance were also treated to posters and schedule cards and had a chance to meetand take photos with all of the 2004 Huskies. The Dawgs will hold one more workout, Sunday at Husky Stadium, before packing thebuses tomorrow afternoon for The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., where theteam will hold a week's worth of practices. Monday, the Huskies will hold their first full-pads practice before going through their first two-a-day session on Tuesday.
