Tickets On Sale For 2004 Pete Newell Challenge

OAKLAND, Ca --Tickets are now on sale for the 2004 Pete Newell Challenge Presented by Allstate, through all outlets in the Bay Area and at The Arena in Oakland box office.The eighth-annual doubleheader is set for Friday, Nov. 19, at The Arena in Oakland. It will be held on the official opening night of the 2004-05 college basketball season, the earliest date in the history of the Pete Newell Challenge. In the first game, at 6 p.m., North Carolina plays Santa Clara. In the second game, at approximately 8:30 p.m., defending Pac-10 champion Stanford meets USF.Ticket prices range from $15 to $100.Both Stanford and USF will be guided by new head coaches in their first games. Former Nevada coach Trent Johnson takes over for Mike Montgomery, who left Stanford after 18 years to become head coach of the NBA's Golden State Warriors, and former Arizona assistant Jessie Evans will make his debut at USF after a successful seven-year stint as head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette.North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in Dick Vitale's preseason college basketball poll for, will be making its first appearance in the Bay Area since Dec. 29, 1998, when the Tar Heels were beaten by Cal, 78-71, in the second Pete Newell Challenge. North Carolina Coach Roy Williams was the coach at Kansas when the Jayhawks appeared in the 2002 Pete Newell Challenge and beat Cal, 80-67.
