Cardinal Ranked No. 14 in<i> Soccer America</i> Preseason Poll

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford women's soccer will begin the 2004 season ranked No. 14 in the Soccer America preseason poll. The Cardinal finished the 2003 campaign with a 10-9-2 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance.Under the guidance of second-year head coach Paul Ratcliffe, the team will boast experience and depth this season as Stanford returns seven starters from last year and welcomes back seven seniors and five juniors. Fifth-year seniors and All-Americans Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) will co-captain the squad this fall.Stanford is one of three Pac-10 schools to be ranked in the top 25 before the season, as UCLA earned the No. 10 slot and Arizona State was selected as the No. 20 team. Defending NCAA Champion North Carolina topped the polls, while 2004 Stanford opponents Santa Clara and Notre Dame filled out the top three.The Cardinal is set to kick off the season against 15th-ranked Utah on Friday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at Maloney Field before traveling to third-ranked Notre Dame on Sept. 3.SOCCER AMERICA COLLEGE WOMEN'S 2004 PRESEASON TOP 25
