WOMEN'S SOCCER SET TO KICK OFF SEASON
As the 2004 season gets under way, a total of three Pac-10 teams are ranked among the national Top 25 rankings... Defending Conference Champion and 2003 NCAA College Cup participant, UCLA, is ranked No. 10 in the preseason Soccer America poll and 16th by SoccerBuzz... Soccer America lists STANFORD at No. 14 and ARIZONA STATE at No. 20, while SoccerBuzz lists the Sun Devils as 14th... All 10 Conference teams open the regular season this week, with tournament play ruling the docket... WASHINGTON hosts the Husky Classic Saturday and Sunday, featuring No. 9/12 Penn State and No. 18/10 Ohio State... Meanwhile, ASU and USC travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Nike Seminole Classic, and STANFORD hosts No. 15/No. 18 Utah in other ranked action... All told, Pac-10 teams posted a 53-44-16 record (.540) against Division I nonconference opponents last season, including postseason competition.

All-Pac-10 First Team F Candice Wilks returns for her senior campaign after leading the Pac-10 in scoring (13) last season... For the second year in a row, ARIZONA STATE is picked third in the preseason coaches' poll right behind Stanford... The Sun Devils finished the 2003 season in second with an overall record of 13-5-3 and a conference record of 6-2-1... ASU returns 18 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from last season... After finishing the 2003 season in ninth place, the CALIFORNIA Golden Bears were tabbed for sixth place in the preseason Pac-10 coaches' poll... Cal returns 14 letterwinners, including five starters, from last year's squad... The Bears face a challenging schedule as they are the only team in the Pac-10 to take on the 2003 NCAA champion, North Carolina (Aug. 29), in the regular season... The OREGON Ducks return an experienced roster after losing only three players to graduation... Redshirt JR Nicole Garbin will be the driving force for the Duck offense this season... Garbin broke Duck records in every offensive category last season... OREGON STATE finished last season in sixth place with an overall record of 7-11-2 and a program best 3-5-1 in Pac-10 play... The Beavers return All-Pac-10 Second Team forward, junior Tessa Baker... The STANFORD Cardinal return outstanding SR GK Nicole Barnhart... Barnhart was named to the 2004 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List in August, and stands to be one of the best goalkeepers in school history... Last season's Conference Champion and this season's preseason favorite in the coaches' poll, the UCLA Bruins return 13 letterwinners, including seven starters from the 2003 team... UCLA advanced to the 2003 NCAA College Cup before falling 3-0 to eventual champion North Carolina... The USC Women of Troy feature eight returning starters and 18 letterwinners from last year's NCAA Tournament squad... USC battles four preseason NSCAA Top 25 teams in the regular season: No. 4 Florida State, No. 12 Tennessee, No. 14 Brigham Young and No. 20 Pepperdine... SR GK Julie Peterson boasts a career goals against average of 1.04 and will key the USC defense... Picked to finish fourth in the preseason Pac-10 coaches' poll, WASHINGTON made its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003 and placed fifth in the Pac-10 at 4-4-1... The Huskies return five starters from last year's team that finished with an 11-7-3 record... The returning players are led by 2003 Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year, SR F Tina Frimpong... WASHINGTON STATE finished 2003 with a record of 6-11-2, going 2-5-2 in Pac-10 play... The Cougars face a formidable nonconference schedule that includes five pre-season NSCAA Top 25 teams, including No. 7 Portland, No. 12 Tennessee, No. 14 Brigham Young, No. 20 Pepperdine and No. 24 Utah.
