Washington Football Report for Aug. 25
Aug. 25, 2004
Seattle - hour practice in preparation for the season opener Sept. 5 against Fresno State. Practicing in full pads, the team appeared much crisper as a steady rain fell in 60-degree temperatures.'It feels like November,' joked Husky coach Keith Gilbertson. 'It rained the whole time.'With Washington's final two-a-day practice scheduled for Thursday, discussion centered on the Husky quarterback position. The trio of junior Casey Paus, sophomore Isaiah Stanback and redshirt freshman Carl Bonnell are competing to fill the shoes of Cody Pickett, who completed his career by passing for 10,220 yards. Gilbertson is not yet prepared to name the starter at the position for the opener.'We'll get to the place where it is probably best that we say, 'Okay, you're going down the tunnel first and you're next and you're next and that's the way we go,' he said. 'I'm not prepared to say it is for sure.'Gilbertson plans on making his final choice after the team holds its final scrimmage of the fall later in the week.'I hope all of those guys go out there and perform well,' he said. While a number of players remain in red jerseys and are not practicing, senior wide receiver Charles Frederick ran some pass routes today and is expected to return to practice by Friday. Frederick, UW's leading returning receiver with 59 catches for 831 yards last year, sprained his ankle last week in practice. The other news of the day was the move of redshirt freshman Jordan Reffett from the defensive line to offense. He played guard while working with the scout squad members. Reffett has switched from number 95 to 59.'I think that is his natural spot,' Gilbertson said. 'I think he'll be a good player there.'
