UW Women Upset #9 Penn State in Soccer

SEATTLE - Senior Tina Frimpong came off the bench in the second half to score the game-winning goal Friday, lifting the Washington women's soccer team to a 2-1 upset over ninth-ranked Penn State in the first round of the Husky/Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Field.The 2003 Pac-10 Player of the Year, Frimpong took sole possession of the No. 2 spot among all-time Huskies with her 28th career goal. She moved within six goals of the school record of 34 goals established by current UW assistant coach Tami Bennett.Frimpong started the game, but was pulled at halftime with the Huskies trailing 1-0 on a 31st-minute goal by Nittany Lions' All-American Tiffany Weimer. Washington netted the equalizer in the 54th minute on a header by senior Cassie Giles off a corner kick from Kelley Schweighart.The game remained deadlocked until Frimpong scored nine minutes after re-entering the game. She took a pass from Kim Taylor and slid a shot past Penn State goalkeeper Amanda Brown at 74:11 for the decisive goal.Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen registered eight saves for UW which was outshot 13-10. Brown had one save for PSU.In the opening game of the tournament, No. 6 Portland defeated No. 18 Ohio State 2-1 on a Christine Sinclair goal with less than four minutes remaining.The Buckeyes opened the scoring at 7:07 on a looping 35-yard shot by Heather Young, but Portland drew even at 21:21 on Lindsey Huie's 30-yard blast that caromed off the hands of goalkeeper Emily Haynam.The teams exchange opponents Sunday with Penn State and Portland meeting at 11 a.m. and the Huskies hosting Ohio State at 1:30 p.m.NCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER
