Women's Soccer Tops UCSB 2-1 For Second Consecutive Win

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Tiara Hong's goal in the ninth minute of overtime secured the Oregon State women's soccer team's 2-1 win over UC-Santa Barbara during Sunday afternoon's non-conference game at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.The win improves the Beavers' record to 2-0-0, and delivered UCSB their first loss (1-1-0).With just over a minute left in overtime, Jen Crump lofted a corner kick to the far post, where Tiara Hong headed in the game-winner and the first score of her career.'Wonderful performance today,' said head coach Steve Fennah. 'It was exciting to know we were going to open up our first two games at home, and we have done tremendously well getting our first two wins.''People came off the bench and gave us some energy; what a great goal to finish off with a great combination from Jen Crump and Tiara Hong,' Fennah said.The Beaver's Jodie Taylor scored the first goal in the 27th minute of the first half with a long lead down the field from freshman Alyssa Blackwell.UCSB's Allie Kueny scored the game-tying goal off a header with three minutes in the half.'We played outstanding in the first half,' Fennah said. 'We moved the ball around, but kind of lost our way a bit toward halftime', says Steve Fennah.During the second half, Beavers' goalie Melissa Onstad racked up three saves, while UCSB's Jamie Considine had four. OSU led with 19 shots overall while UCSB had 11 shots, however no goals were scored in the second half.'Santa Barbara is a very good team,' Fennah said. 'We've had tough games with them the last three years; Jennifer Borcich is one of the top strikers we've played against on any team, so we were excited to get that win.'This team has worked hard all summer, and today they get paid back for it,' Fennah said.The Beavers will host the OSU Nike Invitational Tournament next weekend, with a game against New Hampshire at 5:00 pm on Friday.
