Quotes From the Dirk Koetter Show Previewing UTEP

Aug. 31, 2004

These are the highlights of the Dirk Koetter Show which aired August 26, 2004 and were transcribed by Alex Hoxeng.Healey: You will be playing UTEP where you had your second job in college coaching.Koetter: We had a good team there in '87 and '88. My former boss Bob Stull is now the AD there and he will be at the game.Healey: UTEP is now coached by Mike Price, formerly at Washington State.Koetter: Mike is a good man and a good friend of mine. He is a good football coach and I wish him luck.Healey: Many of his staff have coached in the Rose Bowl. What do you expect?Koetter: They are going to be a Mike Price-coached team. They are going to spread you out on offense. They will be a one back team and they will spread the field. We expect the defense to look like Washington.Healey: When you prepare for a team under a new coach where do you look?Koetter: Yes, we look at where the coach comes from. We did watch some UTEP films to look at personnel. We looked at Washington State and Washington films because those are the schemes we think they will run.Healey: Their quarterback is Jordan Palmer, brother of ex-Heisman winner Carson Palmer. Their running back is Howard Jackson.Koetter: Jackson is very quick and elusive. He is very capable of taking the ball all the way.Healey: What were Mike Price's defensive hallmarks at Washington State?Koetter: Mike was always a 4-3 on defense. With the type of guys he had at Washington State, that worked well for them.Healey: I imagine your guys are tired of hitting each other and are eager for next Thursday night to get here.Koetter: They have hit each other a lot. We'll slow it down and get our legs fresh and we hope for a great crowd out there on Thursday night. The Arizona State Sun Devils will play UTEP on Thursday, September 2 at Sun Devil Stadium at 7:00 p.m. MST. The game will be aired by Fox Sports Arizona.
