SEATTLE - The Washington women's soccer team parlayed a pair of victories over ranked opponents last weekend into a No. 15 national ranking in the Soccer America magazine poll released Tuesday. The Huskies also drew first-time attention in the Soccer Buzz rankings, moving into the No. 22 position.Washington (2-0) was unranked in the preseason polls before upsetting then ninth-ranked Penn State 2-1 on Friday (Aug. 27) and No. 18 Ohio State 2-1 on Sunday (Aug. 29). UW won its own Husky/Nike Invitational tournament, topping a field that also included Portland. The Pilots, who beat Ohio State 2-1 before losing 2-1 to Penn State, dropped from sixth to 11th in this week's poll. The Nittany Lions moved down to No. 10 in the rankings and Ohio State dropped out of the top 25.The Huskies' new ranking will be tested Sept. 3 when No. 8 Tennessee (1-0) visits Husky Soccer Field for a 7 p.m. game. Friday marks the final home game of the month for UW which does not play again in Seattle until Oct. 15 against USC. The Huskies begin a 10-game road trip next week at the Portland Invitational in Oregon.Six teams in the current rankings are on the Washington schedule, including three top-10 foes. The Huskies still have encounters remaining against No. 8 Tennessee (Sept. 3), No. 9 UCLA (Oct. 17), No. 11 Portland (Sept. 26) and No. 17 Arizona State (Oct. 8).Washington was not ranked entering the 2003 season, but a similar impressive opening weekend moved them into the first regular-season poll.
