Derting On Lott Trophy Watch List

PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State middle linebacker Will Derting has been named to the preseason watch list for The Lott Trophy, named for Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott.The Lott Trophy will be awarded to the nation's outstanding collegiate football player. Key criteria for the trophy selection will be the nominee's IMPACT on college football and his community, IMPACT standing for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community, and tenacity.Lott spent 15 years in the NFL and was a member of four Super Bowl championship teams, earning a spot on the league's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. The former San Francisco great has been active in helping disadvantaged youth in the Bay Area and enhancing diversity in the financial services industry.Derting, who will start in WSU's opener Friday at New Mexico despite suffering a dislocated wrist Aug. 15, was named first team All-Pac-10 as a sophomore in 2003. The Okanogan, Wash., native racked up 86 tackles, including 12 behind the line and 7.5 sacks. He was twice named the conference's defensive player of the week.Derting is one of 36 players on The Lott Trophy watch list, joining fellow Pac-10 standouts Mitch Meeuwsen and Bill Swancutt of Oregon State, Shaun Cody and Matt Grootegoed of USC, and Donnie McCleskey of California.
