No. 20 Bears Defeat Sac State 2-1 in Season Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior midfielder Nick Hatzke converted a late second-half penalty kick to help California defeat Sacramento State in the season opener, 2-1, Wednesday at Edwards Stadium.Senior midfielder Yohei Fukuda, a first-half substitute, made his presence felt when he found the back of the net from 12 yards out in the 42nd minute. The Golden Bears controlled the first-half of the game, outshooting the Hornets 11-0.Things began much the same in the second half, with Cal dominating possession. A momentary defenisve lapse in the back gave Sacramento State a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Senior forward David Fraser stepped up and converted the kick to bring the score even at 1-1.Cal pulled ahead for good when the Bears were awarded a penalty kick in the 89th minute. Hatzke, an honorable mention All-Pac-10 performer last season, calmly netted the game-winner.The Bears outshot Sac State 18-3, with eight of Cal's shots on frame. This is the fourth season opener which Cal has won during the past six seasons.
