Cal Men Finish 4th, Women 5th at USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO - The California men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2004 season with some solid results Saturday at the 13th-annual USF Invitational at Lindley Meadows in Golden Gate Park. The Golden Bear men finished fourth with 109 points, while the women took fifth place with 118 points.Stanford swept the men's and women's team events with perfect scores of 15. UCLA took second on both sides, as well, with 49 (men) and 53 (women) points. Stanford's Anita Siraki claimed the women's title in 17:20.8, while the Cardinal's Peter Meindl (23:29.2) won the men's crown.Senior Ozzie Pina led the way for the Cal men by taking 17th place in a time of 25:08.9 on the 8000-meter course. Freshman Chris Chavez cracked the top 20 in first collegiate race (20th, 25:29.8). Cal's other six runners were also competing in their first official race for the Bears, with sophomore Micah Parker (26:01.0), freshman Stephen Pottey (29th, 26:07.1) and freshman Dan Bloomgron (32nd, 26:22.2) rounding out the team's top five finishers.Redshirt freshman Amanda Thornberry, a prep All-American, shined in her Golden Bear debut, leading her squad with a 25th-place showing (18:40.9). Senior Lindsey Maclise wasn't far behind in 26th (18:46.2). Freshman Rebecca Yau (28th, 18:53.4) and sophomores Pippa Macdonald (33rd, 19:15.9) and Brooke Wells (37th, 19:23.6) also scored for Cal.Many of the Bears' top runners, including All-American Bridget Duffy, did not compete in the USF Invitational. Cal will host the Pac-10 Championships Oct. 30 in Golden Gate Park.The Bears next compete at the Fresno State Invitational Saturday, Sept. 11.
