Memorial Service for Steve Blackford to be Held Sunday Evening
Sept. 4, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. - Members of the Arizona State wrestling family will come together Sunday evening for a memorial service honoring former Sun Devil Steve Blackford, who was killed in a Friday afternoon automobile accident in Colorado. The remembrance will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the landing just under the gold `A' that adorns A Mountain next to Sun Devil Stadium.
The accident occurred as Blackford and 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Sara McMann were traveling to Washington, D.C., and the Catholic University of America where he was to attend law school. The Jeep the couple was traveling in rolled twice about 10 miles east of Brush, Colo. (90 miles northeast of Denver), ejecting Blackford and injuring McMann, who remains hospitalized.
A three-time All-American and two-time Pac-10 champion, Blackford compiled a career 138-30 mark with the Sun Devils while competing from 1997-2001. He recorded at least 30 wins in each of his four seasons in Tempe and also earned academic honors from the conference for his work in the classroom. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, and graduate of Dowling High School, Blackford is survived by his parents, Steven and Karen, his brother John and sister Val.
