Huskies Rise in Women's Soccer Rankings

Sept. 9, 2004

SEATTLE - The undefeated Washington women's soccer team rose from 15th to 12th in the this week's Soccer America magazine national poll after posting its third straight win over a ranked opponent.

The Huskies also moved up in the other soccer polls, including a No. 4 ranking in the NSCAA coaches' poll. UW is listed No. 10 by Soccer Times and No. 15 by Soccer Buzz after drawing no recognition in the preseason rankings.

Washington knocked off its third straight ranked opponent, defeating No. 8 Tennessee 2-1 on Friday (Sept. 3) in Seattle. The Huskies upset No. 9 Penn State (Aug. 27) and No. 18 Ohio State (Aug. 29) by similar 2-1 scores the previous weekend. That marked the first time in school history that UW registered three consecutive wins over ranked opponents.

After opening the season with three straight home games, the Huskies begin a 10-game road trip this week that will keep them away from Husky Soccer Field until mid-October.

The Huskies travel to the state of Oregon for the annual Nike Invitational, beginning with a Friday, Sept. 10 game against UAB (2-1-1). Kick-off is 4:30 p.m. at Merlo Field where host Portland (3-1) plays Weber State at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 12 the teams trade opponents as Washington meets Weber State (1-3) at noon followed by a UAB-Portland matchup at 2:30 p.m.

UW won last year's Nike Invitational over runner-up UConn. The Huskies' stretch of 10 straight road games takes them to Portland, Maryland, San Diego and Arizona as they have 41 days between home games. UW does not play again in Seattle until USC visits on Oct. 15.
