Beavers Match Best Start In Program History With 2-0 Win Over Richmond
Sept. 10, 2004
RICHMOND, Va. - - Stacey Mescher and Janelle Joy each delivered goals to lift the Oregon State women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Richmond (1-3-0) at the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational on Friday. The Beavers matched the best start in school history with a perfect 5-0-0 record.
OSU, which has allowed just two goals in five games, took a 1-0 lead just into the second minute when Stacey Mescher took a cross in the six-yard box from Jodie Taylor and netted her second goal of the year.
Janelle Joy scored her first goal of the season on a cross from Liz Money in the 79th minute for the final tally of 2-0.
'This was a good performance on the road,' seventh-year head coach Steve Fennah said. 'At times, the heat and humidity made it tough for us, but we fought it off very well. This was a tremendously disciplined performance throughout the game. Our back five were outstanding.
'Richmond deserves a lot of credit. They made us work incredibly hard after our first score and gave us a battle.'
Two years ago, Richmond advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
Goalkeeper Melissa Onstad made three saves to move her record to 5-0-0 as the defense locked down the Spider attack. Each team took seven shots.
'Stacey and Jodie are playing very well together, much the same as Stacey and Tessa Baker played well together last year,' Fennah said.Mescher has assisted three of Taylor's goals, and Taylor returned the favor Friday.
'Certainly, they are finding each other and have an understanding of how each other wants to play,' Fennah explained. 'A number of Jodie's goals have been assisted by Stacey, and she repaid the favor tonight.'
OSU matched the 5-0-0 start of the 1995 Beaver squad, which eventually finished 14-6-0 but missed out on the NCAA Tournament.
'I think the key with this group is they know they have to keep humble,' Fennah said. 'They are focusing on one game at a time. In this case, it's not the coaches emphasizing that, it's the players. They're a young team, but there's definitely some great leadership and maturity here.'
The Beavers take on Virginia Commonwealth Sunday.
