Cal Shuts Out Colgate, 3-0
Sept. 10, 2004
MORAGA, Calif. - California scored two goals in the final two minutes to blank Colgate, 3-0, Friday at Garaventa Field on the opening day of the Saint Mary's Invitational. The Golden Bears improved to 3-1-1 with their fourth shutout of 2004, while the Raiders dropped to 3-2.
Cal took the lead at 29:53 of the first half when freshman midfielder Laurie Gartrell scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from freshman forward Stephanie Wieger.
The teams played the next 58-plus minutes scoreless before Cal added two goals in the final two minutes of the contest. Sophomore forward Katie Ratican scored her first goal of 2004 with 1:48 left to play, while Liz Eisenberg tallied her second goal of the year with just 52 seconds ticks on the clock. Wieger, who leads the Bears with six points (two goals, two assists), posted her second assist of the game on Ratican's goal.
The Bears controlled most of the game and outshot the Raiders, 18-2. Colgate goalkeeper Luisa Miller made eight saves. Ashley Sulprizio and Anna Key each played a half in goal for the Bears, and neither one of them needed to make a save to preserve the shutout. Cal held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks, bringing its season advantage in that department to 34-11.
Cal next faces San Jose State Sunday at 2 p.m. in Moraga. Cal freshman midfielder Chioma Igwe sat out today's Colgate game because of a concussion sustained against Pepperdine Sept. 5, but she will possibly return to the lineup on Sunday.
