Former Bruin Garrett Atkins Hits First Major League Homerun
Sept. 12, 2004
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Former Bruin Garrett Atkins hit his first Major League homerun Saturday afternoon in the Colorado Rockies' 13-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. Atkins, in his second stint with the Rockies, drilled a Steve Watkins pitch over the Coors Field fence during a pinch-hit at bat in the seventh inning.
After playing in 25 contests for the Rockies in 2003, Atkins was again brought up to the big leagues on September 7 and made his 2004 debut on Friday, going 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Atkins, who played at UCLA from 1998-2000, becomes the tenth former Bruin to play in the majors in 2004.
