Beavers Travel To San Diego For Three Matches
Sept. 15, 2004
THIS WEEK: Oregon State (3-3, 0-0 Pacific-10) gets set to play in its final tournament before the start of Pac-10 play next week. The Beavers will travel to San Diego this week, where they'll play at the USD Invitational on September 17-18. OSU kicks off the weekend with a 5 p.m. match against Penn on Friday. On Saturday, OSU faces Nevada at noon and then plays host No. 23 San Diego at 7 p.m.
RECAPPING THE SALBASGEON SUITES INVITATIONAL: Oregon State went 2-1 last week, with wins over Oral Roberts (3-1) and Auburn (3-0) before losing to tournament champion Saint Mary's (3-2). Even though they didn't win the tourney, the Beavers still claimed the tourney's Most Valuable Player in sophomore Brittany Cahoon. She hit .421 with 40 kills (3.33 kpg) and 11 blocks (0.92 bpg), highlighted by career-highs of 19 kills against Saint Mary's and seven blocks against Oral Roberts. Allison Lawrence also earned All-Tournament Team honors. Lawrence hit .301 with a team-high 55 kills (4.58 kpg) and added 35 digs (2.92 dpg).
LAWRENCE 34 AWAY FROM 1,000: Senior Allison Lawrence needs 34 kills to become the 10th Beaver to reach 1,000 career kills, and if she keeps at her current pace, she'll reach the mileston this weekend. She's averaging 4.42 kills per game and has had double figures in all six matches this year, including matches with 26 and 28 kills. She could also reach 1,000 digs before the season ends. Lawrence came into this season with 629 career digs, but she had 388 digs as a junior, so a repeat performance would put her over 1,000. With 68 so far this year, her career total stands at 697.
SERIES RECORDS: Oregon State has never played Penn in volleyball. The Beavers are 5-3 all-time against Nevada and 2-0 against San Diego. OSU and Nevada last played in 1992, with OSU winning 3-0. OSU and USD haven't played each other since 1985.
THE OPPONENTS: Penn - The Quakers (2-1) defeated Duquesne and Radford but lost to Virginia in five games last week. Cara Thomason led Penn with 3.83 kills and 4.67 digs per game in the three matches. Penn has four starters back from a team that won the Ivy League and went to the NCAA Tournament last year. Nevada - Nevada (5-2) is led by Salaia Salave'a, who's hitting .411 with 4.92 kills, 2.75 digs and 1.38 blocks per game. Common opponent: Saint Mary's, undefeated at 7-0, has beaten both OSU and Nevada this season. SMC beat OSU in five games last week and swept Nevada on September 3. San Diego - The #23 Toreros (4-2) will be the first of many ranked opponents to face the Beavers this year. They're led by Devon Forster, who is averaging 5.33 kills and and 3.17 dig per game.
BEAVERS IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Oregon State players have already earned several spots in the OSU record books with their performances this year. Abby Windell hit .704 against Saint Louis to break the OSU record for hitting percentage in a five-game match (it was also good for the fifth-best hitting percentage in any match. She had a career-high 20 kills in that match). Allison Lawrence had a career-high 28 kills in that same match, tying for 10th on OSU's single-match list. Desma Stovall's 75 assists against Saint Mary's puts her in a tie for sixth on that list.
HEAD COACH NANCY SOMERA: Nancy Somera is in her sixth season at Oregon State after spending eight years as an assistant coach at USC, her alma mater. She has a career record of 68-85. In 2001, she guided OSU to a 17-12 record, and the Beavers earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. The Beavers have finished 16-16 in two other seasons under her direction. While at USC, Somera helped the Women of Troy earn eight consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and helped develop eight USC All-Americans. Somera also played collegiately at USC, where she was an All-Pacific-10 Team selection in 1987 and 1988. She still holds the USC record for career and single-season aces.
PACIFIC-10 PREDICTIONS: Oregon State was picked to finish eighth in the Pac-10 this year, based on a preseason vote of the conference coaches.
