Stanford Ranked #1 in Pre-Season Poll

Stanford, Ca - The pre-season women's cross country poll has been released and defending NCAA champion Stanford University is a solid favorite to repeat as national champions.

The Cardinal, which returns all seven runners from last year's championship team, gathered ten of the 13 first place votes for 386 points. Providence, which finished third at the NCAA's, gained three first place votes for 372 points.

Brigham Young, Notre Dame, North Carolina State, Colorado, Michigan, Princeton, UCLA and Villanova round out the Top 10. In addition to Stanford and UCLA, two other Pac-10 schools are in the Top 30 in the FinishLynx/NCAA Division I Cross Country Poll conducted by the Women's Cross Country Coaches Association. They are #16 Washington and #19 Arizona State.

The men's pre-season poll is still not available. Both polls will be evenutally posted to the U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association website (www.usccca.org).

Of Stanford's seven competitors at last year's NCAA Championship, five gained All-America honors (Sara Bei, Alicia Craig, Katy Trotter, Arianna Lambie, Amanda Trotter). Bei finished third at the NCAA's last year. In addition to her All-America honors, Bei was named the Pac-10 Athlete of the Year after winning the conference title for a second straight year. In three seasons of cross country competition, Craig has garnered three All-America honors. Craig finished sixth at the NCAA's last year. Together, Bei and Craig have won 12 All-America cross country, and track honors.

The women's team is off to a fast start in 2004. At the recent USF Invitational (9/4/04), Stanford garnered eight of the top ten spots to easily capture top honors. The Cardinal took the top five spots led by Anita Siraki, who won the 5,000 meter run in a time of 17:20.8. Katy Trotter was second (17:21.1) followed by freshman Shannon Bergstedt (17:21.4), freshman Lindsay Flacks (17:21.7) and Amanda Trotter (17:22.9). Other Stanford top ten finishers were Jeane Goff (seventh, 17:35.9), freshman Lauren Centrowitz (eighth, 17:48.1) and Julie Allen (ninth, 17:49.6).

Stanford will host the 31st annual Stanford Invitational on Sept. 25.
