No. 10 Huskies Fall To Rival Portland 2-1
Sept. 16, 2004
PORTLAND, ORE. - No. 10 Washington men's soccer wrapped its six-game season opening road trip, falling, 2-1, to Northwest rival Portland Wednesday evening, the first-ever men's night game played at Merlo Field. The loss was just the second on the year for Washington (4-2-0), a team that had only lost to No. 2 St. John's so far this season. Junior midfielder Mike Chabala scored UW's lone goal on a penalty kick.
The Huskies outshot Portland 19-12 overall, but it was the Pilots (4-1-0) who got on the board first in the 33rd minute. Portland midfielder Miquel Guante scored from 14 yards out on a lead pass from Alejandro Salazar. Washington's goal came in the 60th minute, when Chabala scored on a penalty kick marking the second game this year he has scored in that same fashion.
Shortly after Washington's goal to tie the match at 1-1, UW senior defender C.J. Klaas and Portland's Josh Brown received red cards at 61:44, causing both players to be ejected from the match.
With Klaas missing from his spot in the UW backline, Portland scored the game winner just three minutes following the player ejections, on a 25-yard shot by forward Christopher Sanders. Despite their 12 shots in the second half, the Huskies were unable to find the equalizer.
The two goals allowed by UW junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander were a season-high, as Eylander and the Husky defense had allowed just two goals in the previous five games. The match between these fierce rivals was physical, with six yellow cards issued in addition to the two red cards. Both teams finished with 10 fouls each.
The good news for Washington is that it will finally return to Seattle to play on its home pitch. UW will host the Husky Invitational Friday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 19. The Huskies' home opener will be versus St. Mary's, Friday, at 7 p.m.
