Cougars Record Perfect Day at Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State tennis team looked strong during the first day of competition in the 13th annual Cougar Classic Tournament Friday.
All five Cougars advanced to the semifinals round in singles.
In the No. 1 singles position Nora Gaal handed Montana State's Leutolf a loss in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Gaal then went on to put down Patricia Ruman of Idaho, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semifinal round where she will face Idaho's Jessica Hubbard.
Sophomore Amy Toth also found success playing in No. 1 singles. Toth defeated Montana's Jonna Schwartz in the first round, 6-2, 6-1 and went on to knock off Amanda Becker of Gonzaga, 6-4, 6-5. Toth will face Idaho's Sunel Nieuwoudt in the semifinals.
Playing in No. 2 singles senior Orsolya Sallai defeated Eastern Washington's Sayaka Yoshimoto, 6-1, 6-2. In the quarterfinals Sallai was victorious against Idaho's Mariel Tinnirello, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Sallai will square off against Kareen Konishi of Idaho in the semifinals.
Senior Zsofia Fodor easily grabbed two victories in the No. 3 singles bracket. Fodor knocked off Idaho's Tara Fielding, 6-2, 6-1 and went on to beat Montana State's Anna Hockett, 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. The Pecs, Hungary-native will face Idaho's Efrat Leopold in the semifinal round.
Also competing in No. 2 doubles was senior Chris Martinez who put down Sydney Lederhouse of Gonzaga, 6-2, 6-2. Martinez continued her success by taking her match against Montana State's Katy Clarke by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
All semifinal matches will begin at 8:30 on Saturday.
'I am proud of the way we implemented strategy to fight back and win some matches,' WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. 'I am especially proud of the way Amy Toth bounced back in her first match since having hand surgery during the summer.'
Rain caused five matches to be played in Lewiston, Idaho and postponed doubles play until Saturday. The tournament will continue Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
