California Closes Out Play at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic

ST. HELENA, Calif. - California came away with three singles victories on the third and final day of the Napa Valley Tennis Classic. The Classic, considered one of the nation's premier tournaments, featured men's teams from California, University of Illinois, University of Georgia and Texas A&M University.
Cal's Ken Nakahara, Conor Niland and Dean Wallace all recorded their second singles wins of the tournament. Freshman Nakahara defeated Texas A&M's Matt Bain, 7-6(2); 6-3. Junior Niland, currently ranked No. 17 in the nation, knocked off Chris Martin of Illinois, 6-4; 6-4. Sophomore Wallace outlasted Illinois' Andrew Eklov in three games, 6-3; 1-6; 6-3.
The Golden Bears finished the three day round robin tournament with nine singles victories and one win in doubles. Cal's victories came against top tier opponents - Texas A&M finished 2004 ranked No. 19 in the nation, Georgia was No.6 and 2003 national champions Illinois were No. 2. The Bears came in at No. 30.
Cal features several ranked players in singles and doubles. Niland received a preseason ranking of No. 17 in the nation in singles, with junior transfer Lennart Maack tabbed No. 34. In doubles, the tandem of Niland and senior Patrick Briaud are No. 18.
The Bear's next play in the All America Championships in Chattanooga, TN, from Oct. 4-10.
