No. 12 UCLA Defeats No. 14 Texas A&M, 1-0
Sept. 19, 2004
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - In what was a hard fought battle in 96 degree heat, the No. 12 UCLA Bruins defeated No. 14 Texas A&M, 1-0, in front of 1,791 fans at the Aggie Soccer Complex.
'We schedule tough teams because we want to play games that will make us better,' A&M head coach G Guerrieri stated. 'They have a lot of great athletes on their team and they have that one special player in (Iris) Mora who scored on their one chance.'
Much like the previous meeting between these two teams, the team that controlled the majority of the pace of the game did not come out on top. In 2002, the Aggies and Bruins met in Los Angeles in the round of 16 and A&M came out with the win, off penalty kicks, after not recording a shot the entire match.
Sunday, A&M controlled the majority of the game and outshot the Bruins 12-8 when they came out early and attacked the UCLA goal. A&M took eight first-half shots, to the Bruins three, including a flurry of five headers off four corner kicks and well-hit crosses but was unable to find the net.
Forward Cristina Echavarry, who is tied for the league-lead in goals, had the Aggies' most dangerous chance of the first half with 14:22 left on the clock when she took control of the ball 23 yards out, beat the defender and took a shot from the top of the box that beat UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson before hitting the crossbar.
The Aggies continually harassed the Bruins' backline, forcing them to clear several balls off the goalline, and forcing Henderson to make four saves, but failed to capitalize on their chances.
On a counter attack in the 65th minute, UCLA forward Iris Mora, who plays for the Mexican National team, scored the only goal of the game when she took a ball into the center of the penalty area and connected on a shot that A&M goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak nearly saved with her left hand.
Sunday marked Mora's first appearance in 2004. She did not become eligible to compete until this weekend after making up work in summer school as a result of missed time while playing with the Mexican National Team.
UCLA returns home this week, facing Pepperdine on Friday at Drake Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
