OSU Upsets No. 21 Rhode Island 3-0
Sept. 19, 2004
Corvallis, Ore.- - The Oregon State men's soccer team beat No. 21 Rhode Island Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field to win the Joe Zaher/ Stephen Hensor Classic for the second year in a row. The win raises OSU's record to 3-4-1 and brings URI to 5-2-0.
'I am extremely pleased we won the tournament today,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'This tournament means a lot to our guys and me. The work that Joe Zaher and Stephen Hensor put into this program as well as their commitment to the team is why our program is where it is today.'
Former OSU players Zaher and Hensor lost their lives in the fall of 2002.
OSU's Matt Johnson scored the first goal fourteen minutes into the game off an assist from Loren Hill. The Beavers had six saves while URI had 3, holding the score 1-0 going into the second half.
The Beavers scored again in the 52nd minute of the game when Brett Gardner shot a long ball fifteen yards out.
The final goal of the game came from Bryan Jordan in the 81st minute off an assist by Carlos Cornejo, sealing the shutout for the Beavers 3-0.
OSU forward Chris Murphy led the team with six shots, five of which were shots on goal.
'We did very well locking down URI,' Taylor said. 'We were missing a captain and the guys stepped up and executed the game plan to perfection; everyone helped in achieving this goal.'
Former OSU assistant Jesse Cormier's Vermont squad also beat UC-Davis 2-0 this afternoon.
The Beavers will be home this week, taking on St. Bonaventure Friday, September 24 at 5 p.m. at Lorenz Field and Cornell on Sunday at 2 p.m.
