Bruins on Saturday to Compete at Stanford Invitational

Eric Peterson's women and men's cross country squads on Saturday (Sept. 25) will compete at the Stanford Invitational. Held on the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, both Bruin teams will compete in the 4000m races (women, 4:35 p.m./men, 4:55 p.m.).
Along with the Bruins, there are 19 teams in the women's competition and 17 in the men's, including California, Kentucky, SMU (women only), defending National Champion Stanford and Vanderbilt (women only).
UCLA, preseason rated No. 8 (tied with Princeton) in the U. S., last season at the Stanford Invite won the 6000m race, defeating the Cardinal, the 2003 NCAA Cross Country champion. Running for UCLA this weekend will be - senior Carmen Winant; juniors, Alejandra Barrientos, Jenna Timinsky, Allison Hall and Sarah West; sophomores, Ashley Caldwell and Alison Costello, and freshmen, Claire Rethmeier, Monika Rothenburger and Olga Aulet-Leon.
On Sept. 4 at the San Francisco Invitational, held at Golden Gate Park, the Bruins placed second (53 points) behind winner Stanford (15 points) over the 5k course. The Bruins had two runners in the Top 10 and a total of eight runners in the Top 20. UCLA was led by Costello (6th, 17:26.5) and Timinsky (10th, 17:52.3). Also placing in the Top 15 were Rethmeier (12th, 18:08.6), Aulet-Leon (14th, 18:12.8) and Rothenburger (15th, 18:13.6).
Following the Stanford Invitational, the Bruins will travel to South Bend, IN to compete at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 1.
'This is the first counting weekend (toward national rankings) as we head into the Stanford Invitational,' Peterson said. 'This will be a solid meet. We're using the Stanford Invitational to measure our progress (from our first meet until now) and to tune-up for next weekend's major inter-regional meet at Notre Dame.'
