Sept. 20, 2004
Fullerton, Calif. - The No. 7 California men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to six games after defeating UC Irvine, 2-1, on Sunday night at the CS Fullerton SoccerTown Classic. Senior Carl Acosta and junior Nick Hatzke each tallied a goal.
The game's scoring all occurred during a three minute eruption in the second half. Acosta, a second-team preseason All American was the first to strike, notching his third goal of the season at the 69:22 mark. Junior forward Pieter Berger assisted on the play.
It only took the Anteater's 41 seconds to even the match, when Irvine's Brad Evans slotted a rebound home to tie the game at 1-1.
The stalemate wouldn't last, when at 71:41 Acosta was dragged down in the box by an Irvine defender. Junior midfielder Nick Hatzke converted the penalty kick, his third goal of the year, giving him a team-high 9 points so far this season (3 goals, 3 assists).
Cal finished 2-0 at the SoccerTown Classic, but came in second-place to Stanford, also 2-0, on goal differential. Cal's Troy Roberts, Carl Acosta and Pieter Berger were named to the all-tournament team.
The Bears next appear in the Stanford Tournament, facing Brown on Friday at 5 p.m at Stanford. The Bears close out the tournament on Sunday at 7 p.m. against No. 3 Santa Clara in Santa Clara.
