Williams, Ainsworth Named Pac-10 Players of the Week

Sept. 20, 2004

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Tailback Maurice Drew of UCLA, linebacker Jamar Williams and kicker Jesse Ainsworth, both of Arizona State, have been named Pac-10 Football Players of the Week.

Drew, a sophomore from Antioch, Calif., had a record-setting day in UCLA's 37-31 win at Washington. Drew rushed 26 times for 322 yards (12.4-yard average) and five touchdowns that covered 47, 62, 58, 15 and 37 yards. The 322 yards rushing is a UCLA record and the third-highest single-game total in Pac-10 history. The five touchdowns tied the Pac-10 record for rushing touchdowns in a game. Drew's effort paced a UCLA offense that put up 546 yards total offense, including 424 yards rushing, and the Bruins were forced to punt only once. In addition to Pac-10 player of the week honors, Drew has been named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National 1-A Offensive Player of the Week.

Williams and Ainsworth played key roles in Arizona State's 44-7 win against No. 16-ranked Iowa. Williams, a junior from Houston, Tex., recorded nine tackles, four solo, including a quarterback sack (-6) and intercepted a pass, returning it 31 yards to set up a Sun Devil touchdown. The Arizona State defense limited Iowa to eight first downs and 100 yards total offense (56 rushing, 44 passing), just 2-of-12 on third-down conversion attempts and posted four quarterback sacks (-25). It marked the second week in a row an Arizona State linebacker was named defensive player of the week as Dale Robinson picked up the honor last week against Northwestern.

Ainsworth, a sophomore from Thousand Oaks, Calif., was three-for-three on field goal attempts from 28, 48 and 33 yards, was perfect on five PAT attempts and six of his nine kickoffs were touchbacks and not returned.

Also in Arizona State's win against Iowa, quarterback Andrew Walter passed for 428 yards and five touchdowns, which in most weeks would merit player of the week honors were it not for the heroics of UCLA's Drew.

Others nominated for offensive player of the week honors were quarterback Walter of Arizona State, tailback Reggie Bush of USC, wide receiver Jason Hill of Washington State and tight end Joe Newton of Oregon State. Also nominated on defense were llinebackers Lofa Tatupu of USC, Keith Ellison of Oregon State, Will Derting of Washington State, and Spencer Havner of UCLA and safety Lamon Means of Arizona. Punter Danny Baugher of Arizona was nominated for special teams play.
