Dustin Pedroia Visits Fenway Park

Sept. 21, 2004

Former Arizona State Baseball All-American Dustin Pedroia (2002-04) got a taste of big league life on Monday when he took batting and defensive practice with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Pedroia, the Red Sox first pick of the 2004 MLB Amateur Draft in June (2nd round, 65th overall), carried his All-American play at ASU into the professional ranks. He started his pro career with a bang going 4-for-4 for the Augusta Greenjackets (July 19) and quickly moved up to the Sarasota Red Sox in the Florida State League. He hit .400 (20-for-50) with five doubles and a home run for Augusta and hit .336 (36-for-107) with eight doubles, three triples and two home runs for Sarasota. In 42 games split between both teams, Pedroia combined to hit .357 (56-for-157) with 13 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI. He did not make an error in his 42 starts at shortstop.

Pedroia (Woodland, Calif.) hit .393 (96-for-244) with 24 doubles, nine home runs and 49 RBI while being named a consensus All-American as a junior in 2004. He ended his ASU career ranked seventh in the record books with a .384 batting average (298-for-777) with 71 doubles, 14 home runs and 146 RBI. He played and started all 185 games of his Sun Devil career and became only the fourth player in ASU history to earn first-team All-Pac-10 honors in three straight seasons. Pedroia was one of five finalists for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award and was a two-time member of the USA Baseball National Team.

The following are excerpts from Boston area newspapers and website on Pedroia's visit to Fenway Park:

Boston Herald -- Sept. 21, 2004:

Shortstop Dustin Pedroia, 20, the club's first pick in the June draft, was at Fenway and took batting and fielding practice. At 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, Pedroia cuts a less-than-imposing figure on the field, but his credentials are weighty enough.

'Every day, people are still doubting me,' Pedroia said. 'A guy my size, `He can't do it, he can't do anything.' I've got to prove people wrong.'

After signing, he played 30 games for Single-A Sarasota and hit .336 with two home runs and 14 RBI, and 12 more games with Single-A Augusta, where he hit .400 with a home run and five RBI.

Boston Globe -- Sept. 21, 2004:

The Red Sox' No. 1 draft pick from this past June, Arizona State shortstop Dustin Pedroia, was in town for a visit. Pedroia took batting practice and generally was in awe of Fenway Park in his first visit not only to the stadium, but to Boston. 'It's awesome being here,' Pedroia said. 'I wanted to see the Monster after having seen it so much on TV. It's pretty cool.' Pedroia played for Red Sox affiliates in the South Atlantic and Florida State leagues in August. He hit .400 for Augusta in 12 games and then was moved to Sarasota, where he hit .336 in 30 games. His off-season plans include working out in Reno, Nev., and playing instructional league ball. Asked where he'll start next season, he said, 'I have no idea.'

MLB.com -- Sept. 21, 2004:

Boston's first pick in this past June's First-Year Player Draft paid the first of what he hopes will be countless trips to Fenway Park on Monday. Dustin Pedroia, a finalist for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award, came to Fenway to take batting practice and field grounders at shortstop.

'It's my first time here in Boston,' said the Arizona State University star shortstop and Sacramento, Calif. native. 'I wanted to see the Monster. I didn't know a lot of the history in Boston because I'm from the West Coast, but just hearing about it and finally understanding it, it's been an awesome experience.

'It's an organization that loves winning and wants to win championships and is trying to get to that point. I'm real close to the Oakland A's, so the only thing I hear is, 'Man, we don't want to play Boston,'' said Pedroia.
