WEEKEND RECAP -- USC played to a 1-1 tie at home on Sept. 16 against BYU and recorded a 2-0 shutout on Sept. 19 at San Diego. In the BYU match, Rosa Anna Tantillo tallied her sixth goal of the season to tie the game in the 79th minute as redshirt freshman goalie Veronica Simonton recorded her first collegiate start. The Women of Troy outshot the Cougars by a 16-5 margin. Simonton did not record a save on Sunday, but still earned her first collegiate shutout against the Toreros. Senior Shannon Cross opened the scoring in the 65th minute at San Diego, followed by a last-second goal by sophomore Tracy Lansing. USC dominated again with a 17-5 advantage in shots.
NO SOPHOMORE JINX -- Sophomore midfielder Rosa Anna Tantillo (San Diego/La Jolla HS) earned 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors after leading the team in goals (seven), points (16) and game-winning goals (three). This season, she leads the team with six goals and 15 points (6-3=15). On Sept. 5 against Rutgers, she scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in USC's 3-2 win. Tantillo added her second two-goal effort in as many games in a 4-1 win on Sept. 10 against Mississippi State. She registered a five-point game with two goals and an assist in a 3-0 upset win last year on Sept. 26 at No. 18 Santa Clara.
SUDDEN IMPACT -- Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Veronica Simonton (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) started the season as the backup goalie to senior Julie Peterson, but is making a push to be the team's starter. Simonton made her first career start on Sept. 16 in a 1-1 tie against BYU and recorded her first shutout on Sept. 19 in a 2-0 win at San Diego. She is 2-0-1 this season with a 0.54 goals-against-average.

The team split games between McAlister Field and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before playing exclusively at McAlister Field, located on the corner of 30th and Hoover, prior to the 2002 season. USC boasts a 22-8-5 (.700) record at McAlister Field.
