Tournament Talk: Stanford will travel a few miles south to the Santa Clara Classic this weekend ... on Friday, the Cardinal will match up against Denver at 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Stanford will face Marquette at 11 a.m. ... Stanford is 7-3-2 all-time at the SCU tournament and is the only team besides the Broncos to ever win the tournament, after besting their hosts in 2002 on a goal-differential tie-breaker ... earlier this season, Stanford finished 0-2 at the Notre Dame Tournament, but wins over Cal State Fullerton and Yale to claim a share of the Stanford Nike Invitational.
Cardinal vs. Pioneers: Stanford is 2-0 all-time against Denver, the most recent win coming in 2001 when the Cardinal defeated the Pioneers, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Stanford ... the teams first met in 1985 ... that year, the Cardinal won a 1-0 decision at the Colorado College Tournament in Colorado Springs.
Denver Dialogue: Denver is off to a 2-5-1 start, their only wins coming against Idaho and San Diego ... Stanford and Denver have played one common opponent in Utah ... the Cardinal blanked the Utes, 3-0, in the season opener, but the Pioneers dropped a 3-1 decision to Utah at the Wake Forrest Classic ... Maggie Kirchhoff is the only Pioneer to have scored two goals this season ... Lleane Grimditch tops the point total with five on one goal and three assists ... Denver has been shut out four times this season and is averaging 1.46 goals against on the year.
Cardinal vs. Golden Eagles: For the fourth time this season, the Cardinal will take on a brand-new opponent, as Stanford and Marquette have never matched up before ... this fall, Stanford is 3-0 against never-before-seen opponents ... the Cardinal defeated Utah (3-0), Missouri (1-0) and Cal State Fullerton (2-0).
Marquette Memo: Marquette enters the weekend with a 4-3-0 record, after dropping its conference opener to DePaul last Sunday ... Marquette will face Santa Clara on Friday night before playing Stanford on Sunday ... two players on the Golden Eagles roster, Julie Thompson and Meghan Connelly, have scored five points this season on a pair of goals and an assist ... Katie Bissen has recorded three shutouts in goal and owns a 1.61 goals-against average.
Santa Clara Story: The hosting Santa Clara Broncos visited the Stanford Nike Invitational last weekend and earned a share of the tournament title, as both teams won a pair of games by a combined 3-0 margin ... the two schools will play for the first time this season at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 30 at Santa Clara.
Rankings Report: With four-straight wins, the Cardinal earned its first ranking this season in the NSCAA/adidas poll, taking the No. 20 spot ... after allowing three goals at the Notre Dame Tournament, Stanford has blanked its last four opponents, helping the Cardinal to a No. 16 ranking from Soccer America and a No. 25 ranking from Soccer Times.
Preseason Points: After a third-place finish in the conference and an NCAA Tournament appearance last fall, the Cardinal is ready for the 2004 season ... with seven starters back from last season and the return of Marcie Ward to the line-up, conference coaches voted Stanford as their likely choice for Pac-10 runner-up this season, with the Cardinal receiving two votes for first place.
Barnhart Bullets: Senior goalie Nicole Barnhart has been named to the Soccer America and College Sports Television (CSTV) Preseason All-America teams, as well as the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List ... the two-time All-American is co-captain of the Cardinal for the second-straight season ... look for Barnhart to be featured on Stanford's weekly television program 'The Farm Report' on FSN Bay Area on Saturday, Sept. 25 ... the clip will also be available on-line at GoStanford.com.
