Sept. 24, 2004

Corvallis, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team beat No. 25 St. Bonaventure 2-1 in double overtime Friday evening at the Diadora/Clif Bar Challenge at Lorenz Field.

The game marks OSU's second straight win against a ranked team, following a 3-0 win against No. 21 Rhode Island. St. Bonaventure fell to 4-1-1 with their meeting against OSU, while the Beavers rose to a 4-4-1 mark on the season.

'It was really a team effort today,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'We were willing to lose to try and get the win, and the gamble payed off'.

St. Bonaventure's Andy Garcia scored the first unassisted goal of the game in the 14th minute off a penalty kick.

OSU quickly came back in the 16th minute of the game when Matt Johnson scored off his own deflected shot, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie.

Despite OSU outshooting the Bonnies 10-2 during the second half, no goals were scored forcing the game into overtime.

During the third minute of double overtime Brett Gardner took pass from Matt Johnson, beating off two defenders to score the game winning goal.

'Gardner put in a great individual effort today,' Taylor said.

Johnson and Gardner's goals marked their third each on the season.
