Ghebray, Jones Leads Cal at Roy Griak Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Cal men's cross country team finished 17th, while the women took 26th at the 19th-annual Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course. Led by junior Giliat Ghebray's 44th-place finish against nationally-ranked competition, the Bear men posted 462 points. The Bear women totaled 688 points.

No. 2 Wisconsin easily won the men's team competition with 21 points. Butler placed second with 102 points, while Arizona State was third with 116 points. The Badgers' Matt Tegenkamp won the individual crown in 24:02. On the women's side, No. 2 Providence grabbed the team title behind a first-place finish from Kim Smith (21:10). Arizona State took second with 81 points, while UC Santa Barbara was third with 145.

Ghebray finished the 8K race in a time of 25:23 in his first event of 2004. Junior Kevin Davis was the Bears' next fastest runner, placing 87th in 26:01. Senior Ozzie Pina and sophomore John Eves crossed the finish line within seconds of each other, placing 112th (26:22) and 114th (26:25), respectively. Also scoring for Cal was senior Girmay Guangul in 125th place (26:35).

Sophomore Samantha Jones led the Cal women for the second time this year, taking 123rd (23:21) in the 6K race. Junior Maja Ruznic and freshman Rebecca Yau weren't far behind, finishing in 129th (23:26) and 137th (23:33), respectively. The Bears' other scorers were senior Chloe Jarvis (187th, 24:06) and freshman Amanda Thornberry (198th, 24:17).

Later today, several Cal athletes will compete at the Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. Next week, Cal competes at the San Francisco State Invitational Oct. 2 in Golden Gate Park.
