Beavers Eighth After Two Rounds At Husky Invitational
Sept. 27, 2004
BREMERTON, Wash.- - The Oregon State men's golf team posted a two-round total of 758 Monday at the Opus NW Husky Invitational at the par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain. The Beavers sit in eighth place with one round left to play.
Sophomore Jonathan Green, coming off last week's record-setting win at the Northwest Collegiate Classic, struggled today and posted a 157.
'We didn't play too well today,' said OSU head coach Brian Watts. 'This anxious, young squad made some significant mistakes early that cost us some strokes.
'We played solid in the afternoon round, but again had some mental mistakes that hurt us. With this strong field, we can't afford to do that.'
Senior Brad Simpson and sophomore Mitch Gillis are tied for 23rd and lead OSU after two rounds. Simpson carded an eagle early in his second round on the par-5 11th hole, his second hole of the round after a shotgun start, and finished with a strong 2-over 74.
USC posted the only two team rounds under par for the day and holds a sizeable 19-stroke lead over second-place Brigham Young. The Trojans sit atop the leaderboard with a two-round total 5-under 715.
USC golfers Taylor Wood and Ben Hayes hold the top two positions after rounds of 139 and 140, respectively. Hayes is tied for second with Jay Westerlund of UC-Davis.
Sophomore Ryan Gilmour is the only other Beaver in the top 30 with a 6-over 150.
'We'll talk about the mistakes we made tonight and try to go out there and have a strong showing tomorrow,' said Watts.
The final round begins Tuesday morning at 7:30 PST.
