Cal Competes at San Francisco State Invitational
Sept. 28, 2004
BERKELEY, Calif. -
CAL SENDS SMALL GROUP TO SF STATE: After a busy weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational and the Stanford Invitational, Cal will send only a small group of athletes to the San Francisco State Invitational Saturday, Oct. 2 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The men's 8K race begins at 9 a.m., while the women's 5K starts at 10 a.m. at Lindley Meadow. The Golden Bears will host the Pac-10 Championships at the same site Oct. 30.
DUFFY TO REDSHIRT 2004 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON: Cal junior All-American Bridget Duffy will redshirt the 2004 cross country season, head coach Tony Sandoval announced this week. There were several factors that went into the decision. First, Duffy lost some training time early in the summer due to an injury. Since Duffy was planning on being at Cal for five years, using this year as a development year will allow her to be at her best during her final year of cross country eligibility in 2006. In addition, Duffy will have a chance to contribute to a more seasoned team before she graduates, as this year's squad is loaded with talented freshmen and sophomores. Also, Cal's likely No. 2 runner this year, Abby Parker, is redshirting due to a knee injury. Duffy is expected to compete during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons this school year.
CAL'S SF STATE LINEUP: Freshmen Tim Bardet and Wes Davison are slated to represent the Cal men at the San Francisco State Invitational, while the Bear women will send junior Lauren Barbieri, sophomores Whitney Schmucker and Lisa Sandoval, and redshirt freshman Whitney Russell.
GHEBRAY WINS 2003 SF STATE INVITE: Cal junior Giliat Ghebray won the 2003 San Francisco State Invitational as a sophomore in a time of 25:22.4. Senior Chloe Jarvis was the Bear women's top finisher, placing 31st (24:14.7).
2004 GRIAK INVITATIONAL IN REVIEW: The Cal men's cross country team finished 17th, while the women took 26th at the 19th-annual Roy Griak Invitational Sept. 25 at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis. Led by Giliat Ghebray's 44th-place finish against nationally-ranked competition, the Bear men posted 462 points. The Bear women totaled 688 points. Ghebray finished the 8K race in a time of 25:23 in his first event of 2004. Junior Kevin Davis was the Bears' next fastest runner, placing 87th in 26:01. Senior Ozzie Pina and sophomore John Eves crossed the finish line within seconds of each other, placing 112th (26:22) and 114th (26:25), respectively.
