BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team will host the first Cal Nike Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Center on campus. The Invitational features seven of the nation's premier women's tennis programs and is put on in cooperation with Nike and PowerBar.

The Golden Bears will be joined by the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, UC Davis Aggies, Sacramento State Hornets, Texas Longhorns and Washington State Cougars. Cal, Arizona, ASU, Sac State and Texas all finished in the top 40 in the nation in 2004.

Cal is led by preseason nationally ranked No. 30 Sasha Podkolzina (Cal) in singles. Podkolzina and partner Suzanna Babos are also ranked No. 41 in doubles.

Last year, Cal reached the second round of the regional championships before falling to Fresno State. The Bears finished the year ranked No. 14 in the nation.
