Ike Diogu Named Playboy Preseason All-American
Sept. 28, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State junior forward Ike Diogu has been named to the 10-man Playboy preseason All-American team for the second straight season. The Garland, Texas, native was the first Associated Press preseason All-American in ASU history last fall (the 11th in Pac-10 history), has twice earned Associated Press Honorable Mention honors.
He averaged 22.8 points per game in 2003-2004, which not only led the Pac-10 but was ninth in the nation. Diogu will enter the 2004-2005 season as the nation's third-leading returning scorer and also is the first Pac-10 scoring leader to be back on campus the following season since Reggie Miller won the honors in 1985-86 and returned in 1986-87.
Diogu has notched double digits in all 59 career games (the best current mark in the nation) and earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 2002-2003 and already is the ASU career record holder with 423 free throws made. He has 29 career 20-point games, five 30-point games and 15 career double-doubles.
Diogu set the Pac-10 record last year by making 243 free throws, breaking the previous Pac-10 record of 237 set by Mel Counts of Oregon State in 1963-64. He also led the league in minutes per game at 36.9 and 20 point-games (17). He was an ESPN.com third-team All-American, one of 20 finalists for the Naismith Player of the Year and one of 16 finalists for Rupp All-American honors last year.
