No. 12 Cal Volleyball Falls at No. 13 Santa Clara, 3-0

SANTA CLARA, CA - The No. 12-ranked California women's volleyball team (7-4) fell to No. 13 Santa Clara (9-2), 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-25) Tuesday night at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara. All four of the Golden Bears' losses this season have been to ranked teams, and by 3-0 scores.
The Broncos were led by the Muratore sisters - Toni with 14 kills and Annalisa with 12 kills - a finished with a team hitting percentage of .287. Cal's top hitter was senior middle hitter Camille Leffall, who finished with 12 kills and a .455 hitting percentage (12k, 2e, 22att). Senior outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy added 11 kills, junior middle hitter Alicia Powers had seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage (7k, 1e, 13 att) and sophomore Jillian Davis had a team-high 16 digs.
In game one there were 17 ties. Finally, an Abernathy kill tied the game at 28-28, only to see a Toni Muratore kill give the Broncos a 29-28 advantage. On the following play an Amanda Fox kill attempt went long for Cal, giving Santa Clara the 30-28 win. Leffall led the Bears with five kills and no errors in eight attempts in game one.
In game two Cal got itself in a hole early, falling behind 10-5. The Bears did get within 27-20 on a Powers' kill and 28-22 on a Fox kill, but the Broncos' Anna Cmaylo and Jac Heler gave Santa Clara a 2-0 lead on back-to-back kills to win 30-22.
Cal battled in game three, but again couldn't pull out a win. The Bears got within, 27-24, on a kill by Powers, yet the Broncos sealed the match on two kills by Annalisa Muratore and a kill by Cassie Perret.
The Bears will next travel to No. 11-ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Burnham Pavilion on the Stanford campus. The Cal-Stanford match will be televised by Fox Sports Net and shown Saturday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 12 p.m.
