Conference action kicks off this weekend in the 2004 Pac-10 men's soccer race... Two-time defending Pac-10 Champion UCLA (4-1-2 overall) was tabbed to win a third straight league title in the preseason coaches poll, while CALIFORNIA (7-0-1) and WASHINGTON (6-3-1) were picked to finish second and third, respectively... Pac-10 men's soccer titles have been claimed by UCLA (2002, 2003), STANFORD (2001) and Washington (2000)... The Golden Bears visit the Cardinal Friday night in a matchup pitting the Pac-10's highest-ranked teams against one another... The Bruins play host to OREGON STATE (5-4-1) and Washington... The Huskies play their final non-conference match against UC Riverside on Friday night... Pac-10 teams posted a .721 winning percentage (28-9-6) in non-conference action... Four teams have non-league competition remaining on their slates following this week's play.

NAMED PAC-10 MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK


California junior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 21-27.

Kronberg, from Santa Rosa, Calif., recorded his third and fourth shutouts of the season in helping the Bears win the Stanford Nike Invitational. After posting three saves in the Bears' scoreless draw against Brown, Cal shut out No. 3 Santa Clara 1-0 on the strength of Kronberg's five saves. California's victory snapped the Broncos' 15-match home win streak.

Kronberg `s current goals against average is 0.24, having allowed just two goals in the eight games Cal has played this season. The Bears (ranked No. 3 in the Sept. 28 Soccer America poll) travel to Stanford to open Pac-10 play on Oct. 1.

This is the second weekly honor for Kronberg, and the sixth all-time player of the week honor for the Bears. Kronberg's last weekly honor came Sept. 23, 2003, while a student-athlete at Fresno State, which competed as member of the Pac-10 in 2002 and 2003. He is the first men's soccer player ever to win the honor at two different Pac-10 institutions.

PAC-10 MEN'S SOCCER NOTES...

CALIFORNIA stretched its unbeaten streak to eight games while capturing the team title at the Stanford Nike Invitational... The Bears' 1-0 defeat of Santa Clara halted the Broncos' 15-match home win streak... SR GK Eric Kronberg has posted four shutouts on the season. OREGON STATE meets up with a ranked opponent for the third time in its last four games when it travels to UCLA on Friday... The Beavers knocked off No. 19 Rhode Island Sept. 19 and No. 25 St. Bonaventure Sept. 24. STANFORD has already surpassed its win total from the 2003 season (3)... SR GK Robby Fulton posted seven saves on the weekend, including two in the Cardinal's 2-0 loss to Santa Clara. UCLA SR F Mike Enfield has scored three goals in the Bruin's last three games... Enfield, named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Sept. 21, scored just 48 seconds into the match at Cal State Fullerton. SO F Kevin Forrest scored two goals and added an assist for WASHINGTON, as the Huskies won their own Husky Fever Classic... UW claimed the title on goal differential after defeating UC Irvine (2-0) and losing to Akron (2-1)... Forrest was named Offensive MVP of the tournament... JR GK Chris Eylander picked up his fifth shutout on the season in the 2-0 win over UC Irvine.
