Cal Nike Invitational Day One Results

BERKELEY - Day One of the Cal Nike Invitational is in the books, with two California players advancing to the quarterfinals, as well as one Cal doubles pair. The Invitational pits the Golden Bears against Arizona, Arizona State, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Texas and Washington State.
Sophomore Monica Wiesner convincingly defeated Arizona's Iza Ferreira, 6-1; 6-0, then outlasted fifth seeded Arizona State's Sabrina Capannolo in three sets, 7-5; 2-6; 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals. Cal's other singles quarterfinalist, freshman Suzi Babos, received a first round bye as the tournament's four seed, then defeated Arizona's Camelia Todorova in two sets, 6-0; 6-1.
In doubles action, the Cal tandem of junior Brooke Borisoff and freshman Hilary Englert beat UC Davis' Ally Muller and Ashley Lehman to advance to the quarterfinals.
Cal freshman Cristina Visico, seventh seed, won her first collegiate match, blanking Davis' Lehman in straight sets, 6-0; 6-0. No. 1 seed Sasha Podkolzina was upset by Arizona State's Rebecca Rankin, 5-7; 6-2, 6-2.
Action continues tomorrow at Berkeley's Hellman Tennis Center from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. Admission is free.
