Sara Bei Captures Individual Title At Notre Dame Invitational

Notre Dame, In - The top-ranked Stanford women's cross country team and the second-ranked Cardinal men's team raced to victories against some of the toughest competition in the nation at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday at the Burke Memorial Golf Course.

Senior Sara Bei won her second straight race in as many weeks as she defeated 194 other runners over the 5,000 meter course in a time of 16:22. Three other Cardinal runners finished in the top 10 including Alicia Craig in third place (16:34), Katy Trotter in seventh place (16:52) and Anita Siraki in tenth place (17:02).

The Stanford women, the defending NCAA champion and strong favorites to win again in 2004, finished with 34 points, 50 points better than runnerup and sixth-ranked Michigan. Nine of the 24 teams, including Stanford, were ranked in the nation's top 30.

The Cardinal men, the two-time defending NCAA champion, defeated 23 other teams with a team total of 89 points, five points better than runnerup Notre Dame. Eight nationally-ranked teams competed in the 8,000 meter race. Stanford was paced by redshirt freshman Neftalem Araia who finished third in a time of 23:44, and Jacob Gomez who placed tenth (23:54).

Freshman Katie O'Neill competed in the women's junior varsity 5,000 meters and finished fifth in a time of 18:20.
