Oct. 1, 2004
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The 2004-05 women's tennis season swings into action this weekend at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Six Huskies will be making the trip to the Riviera Tennis Club to vie for the first of the season's three national championships in singles and doubles. A series of qualifying rounds started today and continue until Oct. 6, with the main draws in action from Oct. 7-10.
Husky senior Dea Sumantri leads the UW contingent. Sumantri, Washington's top returnee, is an automatic qualifier for the main draw and begins the fall ranked 11th in the preseason ITA rankings. The remaining UW women must work their way through qualifying to reach the main draw. Huskies in the prequalifying bracket include juniors Dinka Hadzic and Stephanie Svanfeldt, sophomores Saskia Nauenberg and Monika Kolbovic, and making their collegiate debuts, freshmen Tara Simpson and Allison Rainey.
Sumantri and Hadzic are entered in the qualifying portion of the doubles tournament, while Kolbovic and Svanfeldt and Rainey and Simpson each team up to compete in the prequalifying doubles rounds.
Players in the prequalifying tournament must win four singles matches to reach the Oct. 5-6 qualifying rounds. In qualifying, players must win an additional three matches to make it to the 32-player, 16-doubles team main draws.
Over 60 schools from across the country will be sending players to compete.
