Nauenberg And Simpson Advance At All-American Championships
Oct. 2, 2004
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington women's tennis team opened up play for the 2004-05 season today at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. For the Huskies, sophomore Saskia Nauenberg and freshman Tara Simpson earned opening round wins in the prequalifying singles bracket.
Held at the UCLA campus, the day's prequalifying rounds marked the start of a long journey for many players just to reach the main draw of the event which boasts the largest field in collegiate tennis. Main draw play runs from Oct. 7-10. For Nauenberg and Simpson to reach the main draw, each will need to win six more preliminary matches. UW senior Dea Sumantri is an automatic entrant into the main draw thanks to her No. 11 preseason ranking.
Simpson picked up the win in the first match of her college career, ousting Purdue's Alyssa Rodriguez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Nauenberg was taken to a third set by Serena Fermin of Loyola Marymount before prevailing, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Three Huskies went down in first round action including juniors Dinka Hadzic and Stephanie Svanfeldt and freshman Allison Rainey. Sophomore Monika Kolbovic received a first round bye.
The Huskies also had a pair of doubles teams entered in prequalifying. Kolbovic and Svanfeldt paired up as did the freshmen team of Rainey and Simpson. Both tandems fell in the first round by 8-3 scores.
Second and third round prequalifying matches will be played on Sunday.
