Husky Trio Ousted From All-American Championships

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Three Husky women's tennis players had their seasonopening tournament runs ended today at the Riviera/ITA All-AmericanChampionships. Sophomores Saskia Nauenberg and Monika Kolbovic, and freshmanTara Simpson all were eliminated in the second round of prequalifying at thefirst national tournament of the 2004-05 season.
After notching first round wins on Saturday, Nauenberg and Simpson each fell instraight sets. Nauenberg fell to Tory Zawacki of Duke, 6-1, 6-2. After winningher first collegiate match, Simpson tasted defeat for the first time at thehands of Yulia Rivelis of Penn, 6-2, 6-3. Kolbovic had received a first roundbye, but couldn't get by UNLV's Elena Gantcheva, falling 6-4, 6-1.
Next to see action for the Dawgs will be senior All-American Dea Sumantri andjunior Dinka Hadzic who will compete in the qualifying doubles draw beginningOct. 5. The 11th-ranked Sumantri will then make her singles debut Oct. 7 in themain singles draw.
The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships is the largest tournament in collegetennis and crowns the first of three national champions in singles and doublesfor the year. The National Indoor Championships in November and NCAAChampionships in May complete the national tournament trinity.
