No. 7 UCLA Downs No. 15 Santa Clara in Double-OT
Oct. 3, 2004
LOS ANGELES - Bruin senior Kendal Billingsley scored a golden goal in double-overtime Sunday, helping the seventh-ranked UCLA women's soccer team register 1-0 decision over No. 15 Santa Clara at Drake Stadium. It marks UCLA's first-ever win over the Broncos in five prior meetings. The Bruins move to 7-3 on the season, while Santa Clara drops to 6-3-2 overall.
Billingsley's goal came at the 105:17 mark on a penalty kick. Bruin sophomore Bristyn Davis dribbled into the Santa Clara box and was clipped from behind while in the process of shooting, prompting the call.
'This was a huge win for us,' said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. 'Today you saw two evenly matched teams go out and battle to come out on top and fortunately we did. It was an emotional victory that will build much needed confidence for our program.'
Both teams had several scoring opportunities throughout regulation and into the overtime periods. Santa Clara's best chance came in the 52nd minute when Tina Estrada bounced a shot that hit the UCLA crossbar. The Bruins had one of their best chances just moments later when Davis got free in the box and sent a right-footed shot just wide.
Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson played the entire match, registering four saves. Santa Clara's Julie Ryder also finished with four. The Bruins owned a slim 9-8 advantage in total shots.
The Broncos lead the all-time series 4-1-1. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie up at Santa Clara in 2003. Prior to that, the Broncos had won the first four meetings between the two schools.
Sunday's match was stopped for nearly 30 minutes in the second half when Bruin forward Danesha Adams was injured after a hard collision with a Santa Clara defender. Her injury was not serious, however she was taken to the UCLA Medical Center for precautionary measures.
Santa Clara was the Bruins' final non-conference opponent of the regular season. UCLA opens up Pac-10 play next Friday, hosting Oregon State at Drake Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
