Seniors Guide Women Of Troy To Victory In Tucson
Oct. 3, 2004
TUCSON, Ariz. - Emily Adams led with 14.5 points as the third-ranked USC women's volleyball team defeated No. 17 Arizona, 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-23), on Saturday night in front of 1,917 at the McKale Center in Tucson. The win is the Women of Troy's fourth of this young season against a top 20 opponent.
The Wildcats remain winless in conference play (0-4) and fall to 8-6 overall, while the Trojans improve to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10.
It was a senior effort that guided the Women of Troy in this match-up. Adams led with four blocks, two service aces and a .571 hitting effort thanks to 10 kills. Fellow senior Keao Burdine had a match-best 11 kills, while Alicia Robinson led with 11 digs. USC hit .310 on the night with 49 kills and held Arizona to a season-low .105 hitting percentage and 38 kills.
The Wildcats gained an early lead to start game one, but a 5-0 Trojan rally put USC in the lead, 12-8, and Arizona never managed to catch up. The Wildcats were held to a .083 effort in the 30-20 USC win.
Game two began with a 6-2 USC rally, forcing the Wildcats to call an early time out. But the tactic proved unsuccessful for Arizona, as the Trojans returned to the court and embarked on another 6-2 run for a 12-4 lead. The Women of Troy led by as much as 12 points, 18-6, before completing the win with an identical 30-20 score.
In the third and final set, the Trojans gained an early 8-3 edge and continued to build the lead for the remainder of the game. A late 5-0 run brought the Wildcats within six, 25-19, but that was as close as it would get. USC completed the match with a 30-23 decision.
The Women of Troy return home this week for a critical two-match series. USC hosts 11th-ranked Stanford on Friday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m., then faces No. 12 California on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m. following the USC-Cal football game. Both matches will be played at the Lyon Center.
