Thurmond Withdraws From Mid-Am Championship

Oct. 3, 2004

Sea Island, GA - Washington men's golf coach Matt Thurmond was forced to withdraw from the USGA's Mid-Amateur Championship at Sea Island, Ga. during the first round of play. On the 12th hole of competition, Thurmond said his neck 'locked up on me.'

Thurmond was one of 264 golfers who qualified for the tournament. Saturday was the first day of 36 holes of stroke play that would pair the field down to 64 players. Match play will begin Monday.

'It would not have been fair to the other competitors I was playing with to continue,' Thurmond said. 'I was really slowed down by it.'
