Oct. 4, 2004

LOS ANGELES - The USC women's tennis team began fall competition this week in the pre-qualifying rounds of the 2004-05 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship. The first rounds were played at the Los Angeles Tennis Club on the UCLA campus.

Sophomore Dianne Matias highlighted the event for the Women of Troy, winning three singles matches and two doubles matches with freshman partner Lindsey Nelson to make it into the qualifying round. Nelson also competed in singles, winning two matches of her own.

Sophomore Judy DeVera fell in first round singles, and partners Anca Anastasiu and Erica Sauer, and Erin Everly and Taylon Snyder competed in doubles. Complete results can be found below.

Junior Carine Vermeulen, sophomore Anca Anastasiu and freshman Nicole Leimbach will begin competition in the qualifying rounds on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The tournament, which culminates with the main draw championship to be played Oct. 9-12, is the first of three ITA national and singles and doubles championship throughout the year. This premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.

The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships date back to 1983 when Georgia's Lisa Spain won the inaugural title. Several past champions have gone on to professional careers. In 1999 the University of San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova made history at the Riviera when she won her record fifth national collegiate singles title. Stanford boasts the most singles and doubles champions at this event with a total of eight, and Texas is not far behind with six. Duke's Kelly McCain topped Old Dominion's Nataly Cahana in last year's singles final; Vanderbilt's Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos won the doubles title.
